Titre : La République Pirate
Title : The Pirate Republic
Histoire :
Story :
In the early eighteenth century, former privateers settled in Nassau on the island of New Providence in the Bahamas, an ancient English colony without governor. As they have no more work (the War of Spanish Succession being over), these privateers continued to act as pirates (without a letter of marque) and formed their republic governed by their own laws.
lyrics
Paroles :
Lyrics :
The war is over, peace declared.
The King has fairly laid all of us off.
Becoming civilian, no longer privateer,
Leaving oceans and staying onshore.
Why should one reconvert for not much work ?
Better ending as pirate than becoming penniless !
Do shiver ye bourgeois, sitting in your manors !
All your gold we will plunder so as to pay us drinks.
May our gloomy black sails flutter in the wind.
When you see our vessels, you will have no more hope !
Under the command of Hornigold, established at Nassau,
Looting numerous ships, piling many hoards.
That good old Jennings and his crew
Land on our shores with holds full of gold.
They wanted to try and capture our brothers,
But those who dared did ended down to the sea.
Life is prosperous for these seamen.
Many filibusters rejoined these waters :
Sleazy smugglers, escaped slaves,
All brothers united for freedom.
May this republic keep up for a long time,
Making on tremble the good people.
